Description

Gold blebs accompanied by pyrite and other sulphides in quartz. From an old find dated 1889. One side has a sawn and polished area (see pic 5).

Comes with label of M. Ruppe-Rohe, a german dealer, dated appr. to the 1970's. Translation of the label: "Gold, besides pyrite in quartz. Mine of the Yurarari Company (situated) at Yurarari (yuruari river) near Nuova Providencia, Guajana state, Venezuela. Collection label 1889".

"In the 1850's the first major found of gold was recorded at Tupuquen, north of the yuruari river, near present-day El Callao. In 1857 Federico Sommer, a german prospector, found gold nuggets embedded in clay; one stupendous specimen weighted more than fifteen pounds. The site swiftly grew into a shanty-twon of eighty houses, together with shops and hotels and ironsmiths and carpenters. It was christened Nueva Providencia" (from: Traces remain - Essays and Explorations, by Charles Nicoll, Penguin Books 2011).
