Description

Another australian old timer: Black grains of cassiterite disseminated in mica.

An interesting geological sample which comes with a beautiful and large (12.5 x 6.5 cm) antique label. The label means:
"Kassiterit (derb) (Zinnstein) - Chem. Zus. Zinnoxid - Formel SiO2 - Fundort: Port Darwin Queensland - in Glimmer eingesprengt"
(Cassiterite (rough) (Zinnstein = another german synonym for cassiterite) - Chemical composition: stannic oxide - Formula: SnO2 - Locality: Port Darwin Queensland - disseminated in mica). "Port Darwin" is not to be found in Queensland but in the Northern Territory. It should be noted that references in older texts to "Port Darwin mining district" could refer to mines anywhere up to 200kms south of Darwin (cit. mindat).
