Description

Jeffersonite is a Zn- and Mn-bearing variety of augite, a clinopyroxene. Named in 1822 by Lardner Vanuxem and William Hipolytus Keating in honor of Thomas Jefferson, naturalist and politician, former president of the USA.

This one is not exactly a breauty but a rare, quite large showcase specimen with - for the species - fairly well developed crystals. The matrix consists of massive jeffersonite and a reddish mineral which is likely garnet. Comes with lovely antique Dr. F. Krantz pen&ink label written appr. 1900-1910.
