Description

Anorthite is the calcium-rich end member of the albite-anorthite series. This matrix piece is a very rare find from the historic mines at Tunaberg, famed for outstanding cobaltite crystals. The specimen features old-rose colored crystalline anorthite and grainy white quartz in black mica schist matrix.

This is a pretty old specimen, coming with a very rare label from old Dr. A. Krantz dated to 1830-1850. The company's location "Berlin" at the bottom of the label gives a hint that the specimen dates back before the movement from Berlin to Bonn in 1850. The most of these old "Berlin" labels show a canceled "Berlin" and subsequent stamped "Bonn" for the new head office location - but this one does not! "Amphodelit" is a synonym for anorthite ± illite, Hintze II, 1537 (1895).
