Description

Specimen hosting a deep green, partly translucent garnet var uvarovite crystal, embedded in white quartz matrix. It is fixed with wire in a little test glass with cork stopper.

Regarding the given locality, "Klein Iseltal" (little Isel valley) is likely an old name for the virgen valley, a secondary valley at upper Isel valley, which features serpentinite outcrops near the waterfall in the lower Umbal valley. Here, the typical minerals like chromian chlinochlore, uvarovite, antigorite etc. were found. Uvarovite garnet, especially crystals, is very rare in alpine localities and 3 mms is a respectable size for the species.

Comes with old Tausch coll. label and on-glued corresponding number sticker plus additional Kristalldruse Munich label and a third hand-written label dated 1952.
Karl Tausch (Engineer, German Mine Director "Bergdirektor") was born in 1893 and grew up in the town of Marburg-an-der-Dräu (Maribor) in former Yugoslavia. Following Tausch's death in the 1970s, Christian Weise purchased his 7,000-specimen mineral collection from his widow and resold all but about ten of the best specimens through his dealership in Munich, Kristalldruse.
