Description

Black, glassy obsidian with conchoidal fractures hosting geodes lined with grey, hemispherical aggregates of crystobalite. The "eyes" or spheres of high temperature cristobalite are actually the result of devitrification, or loss of silica from the obsidian. An excellent example for the species.

This specimen resembles strongly the ones from "Cougar Butte occurrence, Cougar Butte, Cascade Range, Siskiyou Co., California, USA", whereas I was not able to find references for this type of obsidian from iceland. This must not necessarily mean that the locality is wrong, but it is a little bit doubtful to me.
