Description

The Mansfeld area was a classic copper mining locality in (former Eastern) Germany. The occurrences were black, bituminous shales which contain copper and silver ores that are usually finely disseminated, but locally the copper concentration reached around 3%, such as in the Mansfeld basin (Mansfeld copper slates) and, further south, near Sangerhausen. Also thin silver sheets were seldomly found in the shale, like the present specimen. Mining activites at around 1200 and continued until 1969, when the mines were finally closed.

The cleavage face which contains the silver sheet shows structures of a slickenside and thin crusts of unidentified copper minerals.
