Description

The Mansfeld area was a classic copper mining locality in (former Eastern) Germany. The occurrences were black, bituminous shales which contain copper and silver ores that are usually finely disseminated, but locally the copper concentration reached around 3%, such as in the Mansfeld basin (Mansfeld copper slates) and, further south, near Sangerhausen. Also thin silver sheets were seldomly found in the shale. Mining activites at around 1200 and continued until 1969, when the mines were finally closed.
This specimen is a typical, so-called "Bornitlineal" (bornite ruler) - a strata bound bornite ore lens in the shale. It has an iridescent, blue-gray color and sets itself clearly apart from the dark brown shale matrix.
