Description

Alvite is a metamict, often Hf-rich variety of zircon from granite pegmatites. The label states "Silicate de Zircone, Thorine, Yttria hydraté". The specimen features a well-developed crystal in pegmatite matrix.
Comes with original hand-written label of A. A. Damour (1808-1902), a well-known french mineralogist. Corresponding number sticker is on-glued on the specimen. His personal mineral collection was sold to F. Krantz (who was in charge of the Krantz mineral dealership between 1891 and 1926), probably shortly after his death. Damour was sufficiently famous that Krantz had special labels printed identifying the specimens from the Damour collection - the second label.
