Description

Native iron from remote Disko Island (Greenland), massive and heavy, and strongly magnetic. Only little basaltic rock matrix. Terrestrial native iron is extremely rare in igneous rocks - an old and seldom seen 19th century specimen. Large blocks (to 25 tons) of native iron were found by Nordenskiöld in 1870, and brought to Sweden as meteorites. It was later found out that iron occurred as nodules in tertiary basalt, formed by reduction due to incorporation of carbon-rich sediments (cit. mindat). Comes with antique label.
