Description

Two fensterquartz crystals on a lenticular calcite coated matrix associated with numerous fine faden quartz lying on the calcites like small fallen trees.

That type of crystallization is very distinctive throughout the Alps : it features outstanding crystallization gaps creating hollows inside the crystal. These are then filled both with solid (clays, oxides) and fluid inclusions (carbonaceous gaz, aqueous liquids or oils) dating back to the quartz formation, in which it is now forever trapped and preserved.

Current knowledge tends to suggest fensterquartz from Allos crystallized prior to the Alps formation, more than 70 million years ago. Subsequent alpine tectonics fractured the crystals to some extent and they eventually healed to form complete clusters.
