Description

What was called betafite has now been discredited as an own species and it is now considered as a variety of pyrochlore. As with most of the members of the pyrochlore group, it is in a revision process. Here you are bidding on a loose, sharp, flattened cubo-octahedral crystal of "betafite" from the original locality. It is developed as a floater and slightly radioactive. This interesting material, once mined for its high uranium content, is no longer regarded as a valid mineral species, due to inhomogeneities in the composition, and is classified as an uranium-niobium rich variety of pyrochlore and is slightly radioactive. This is exceptionally rare material and barely seen on the common market.
