Description

Fluorescent Calcite Dolomite  "Strontium Aragonite"
Photos  in UV-LW,  UV-SW and  natural light

Improperly called "arago-stronzianite" this mineral is actually Calcite, so at least it results from the unequivocal analyzes conducted by Mazzoleni, Dallegno, Menegazzi and published in 2016 by the FMS

The frequent occurrence of slight amounts of Strontium in aragonite was known during the time of Becquerel and he ascribed the luminescence to the presence of strontium. Later, Nichols confirmed the idea. Hence the name strontioaragonite for some specimen of very bright red fluorescing aragonite.

Actually, strontium is not considered anymore as the activator responsable for the red fluorescence of aragonite and  Mn is considered as the principal activator of this red fluorescence.

************

The more colour and green on the specimen (in natural light) and more the fluorescence is intense.

In LW the fluorescense is cherry red and in SW  is more dessaturated and the color therefore tends to pink.
