Mansfieldite On Smolyaninovite

Rare Mineral

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Mount Cobalt Mine, Selwyn District, Cloncurry Shire, Queensland, Australia
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
5.5 × 4.5 × 2.1 cm
Description

This is a really nice specimen of the usually bland looking mansfieldite, however this is contains some cobalt, hence the lovely pink  colour. To make this even better, the pink radiating crystals occur on flat radiating sprays of brown smolianinvite, a rare cobal nickel arsenate. This forms a layer over one entire side. It is difficult to decide what side is best for display.

This is one of the few really good specimens of these minerals I have seen from this mine, the dumps of which unfortunately have recently been acid leached.
