Goethite On Anglesite

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Kintore Open Cut, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
2.3 × 2 × 1.7 cm
Description

These crystals are quite uniuqe and were discovered during open cut mining operations on the old South Mine leases in 1989. This specimen is really one large single crystal with smaller ones formed around the base. The surface is coated with a burnt choclate, orange and yellow coloured crust of goethite. Some of these crystals were also replaced by cerussite, but it is difficult to determine if this is the case here but my opinion is that it has not.

There is some contacting or damage to one back corner which can't be seen from the display side, but it does have the benefit of being able to view the structure of these curious crystals.
