Pyrite With Sturtite On Calcite

Classic Locality

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia
Size Range:
Cabinet (10-18 cm)
Size:
11 × 8.5 × 2.3 cm
Description

An unusual specimen from "The Hill" consisting of small pyrite crystals to 1-2mm with glossy black sturtite (a variety of hisingerite) on top of a plate of grey to white calcite.

The mineralogical interest lies in the pseudomorphing of limonite ? after bunches of radiating manganoan calcite (often labelled as kutnohorite) and the curious sturtite filled cores of the pyrite clusters.

Probably a North Mine specimen, this one is for those looking for something a bit different and challenging from Broken Hill.
