Pine Point, Northwest Territories, Canada

Small miniature (3-4.5 cm)
Size:
3 × 4 × 2.5 cm
Description

Pseudocubic calcite crystals on dolomite from Pit N-32 at the open pit Pb/Zn mine at Pine Point. Very little of the calcite at Pine Point fluoresces but the pseudocubic habit does fluoresce yellow under long wave UV. Generally the psuedocubic crystals are more amber in colour and are usually overgrown by the milky calcite. Natural luster.

The mine is located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake. There are about 45 pits and a few undergound workings. The ground water table is high so some pits are filled to ground level, some with one or two benches above water and the odd shallow dry one. The pits are numbered based on a local grid. Closed in 1988.
