Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Sipi Caves, Mount Elgon, Manafwa District, Eastern Region, Uganda
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
7 × 3.7 × 2.2 cm
Description

Petrified wood, replaced by natrolite, the hollow form filled with very good, acicular, snow-white natrolite crystals growing inwards. Some minor honey-brown calcite crystals present. A little stem close to a bigger natrolite crystal group on the back.

Very rare material, brought to Europe from a scientific excursion a few years ago. Last described by Udluft (1929) and Holms (British Museum 1937). It’s the only fossil material replaced by natrolite that I’ve ever heard of.

Usually it’s strictly forbidden to take anything out of the Mount Elgon area, because it’s a nature reserve.
