Sipi Caves, Mount Elgon, Manafwa District, Eastern Region, Uganda
Class:
Combination
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
7.2 × 2.3 × 0.7 cm
Description

Colorless, acicular natrolite crystals and a few dark honey-brown calcite crystals on a split fossil wood branch, replaced by natrolite. A few dings on the bigger calcite crystals. This material was brought to Europe from a scientific excursion. It's strictly forbidden to take anything out of Mount Elgon area for 'normal' collectors because it's a national park and the caves a reservation for bats.

It's the only fossil replaced by natrolite I've ever heard about. I may have the last specimen of this kind. The material was last described by Udluft (1929) and Holms (British Museum 1937).
