Sipi Caves, Mount Elgon, Manafwa District, Eastern Region, Uganda
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6 × 4.5 × 2 cm
Description

Petrified wood, replaced by natrolite, a split branch, the hollow form filled with acicular, snow-white natrolite crystals growing inwards.

Very rare material, brought to Europe from a scientific excursion a few years ago. Last described by Udluft (1929) and Holms (British Museum 1937). It’s the only fossil material replaced by natrolite that I’ve ever heard of.

Usually it’s strictly forbidden to take anything out of the Mount Elgon area, because it’s a nature reserve.

This one is one of the best in sense of clean, acicular crystals and wood shape.
