Description

Chalcocite (altering to malachite) pseudomorph after wood. Those fossilized logs were really used as ore, most of them melted down for the copper. Nowadays this material is very scarce and sought after. This is the biggest log left with very nice wood structure. The chalcocite itself is in parts altered to malachite, as can be seen also in the cross-section. My only specimen with lustrous, metallic gray crystalline chalcocite peeking through at some places. Little sandstone matrix on the backside, also with chalcocite-malachite. As far as I know this is the only locality which had this kind of chalcocite-after-wood pseudomorph.
