Description
Locality:
Lord Brassey Mine, Heazlewood, Waratah-Wynyard Municipality, Tasmania, Australia
Size Range:
Thumbnail (1-3cm)
Size:
2 × 1.5 × 1 cm
Description

The very rare nickel-carbonate hellyerite was named after surveyor and explorer Henry Hellyer (1791-1832).
Samples of real hellyerite are very rare because this species is relatively unstable and the blue mineral decomposes to an amorphous light green zaratite-like phase. This sample is no exception and has a good coverage of this pale green phase, but some parts of the specimen have preserved the nice crystal habit of the originaly hellyerite crystals. The light green hellyerite pseudomorph is surrounded by emerald green scales of zaratite.
