Once the largest Zinc mine in Europe, the Altenberg Open Pit was closed in 1884 and specimens are nowadays very rare. This large sample has a very rich coverage of small yellowish brown crystals of smithsonite on a, for the locality very typical, brownish matrix. On top of the smithsonite are lots of greenish balls of calcite.
One spot with some damaged calcite balls but otherwise in a good condition for a 130 years old piece. Comes with a small old label.
