Hartite

ex Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences #19224
Rare Mineral

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Rosental, Köflach, Styria, Austria
Class:
Massive/Crystalline
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
6.2 × 7.6 × 1.4 cm
Description

Dark brown layered deposit with small patches of glassy whitish crystalline hartite, a rare hydrocarbon. Although the label states Voitsberg, Germany, which does exist, it is clear the correct location is in Austria. The original collection label suggests a second hydrocarbon material is present - jaulingite, a form of amber.

The Academy label states E.D.Drown, however, the handwriting of the original collection label would suggest the specimen was in the collection of William A Drown, thus dating it between 1850 and 1917. His collection was presented to the Academy by his daughter Emily Darling Drown in 1918. William's son Edward Darling Drown also collected minerals and his collection was deposited with the Academy at a later date.
