Description

Cut slab of high grade silver ore from the Camoola Reef, Maratoto, New Zealand. The dark grey-silver bands consist of aguilarite that is hosted in murky carbonate (calcite). The Camoola Reef is unique within the Hauraki gold field with mineralisation hosted within carbonate rather than typically in quartz. Mining at Maratoto occurred episodically from 1892 to 1927, although the Camoola vein was briefly reopened from 1969 to 1972 to mine silver during which time this sample was collected.
