Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Rotgülden, Lungau, Salzburg, Austria
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Miniature (4.5-7 cm)
Size:
6.5 × 4.5 × 4.3 cm
Description

This matrix piece shows four generations of calcite and two generations of pyrite. Small hedgehog-shaped calcite scalenohedra are overgrown on the top with small, rhombohedron calcites. Small pyrites have occasionally grown on these calcites. On this generation of small calcites larger white skeletal calcites have grown with additional orange, stacked flattened calcites. Between the calcites there is a group of larger pyrite cubes. All calcites show an excellent gloss. A very aesthetic piece from an old collection from the arsenic mining Rotgülden! The mining history goes back about 2,000 years. Today it is prohibited to dig there; the area is a national park.
