Kastningite Kingsmountite & Fairfieldite

Rare Mineral

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Foote Mine, Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States of America
Class:
Crystals on Matrix
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
7.8 × 5.5 × 1.2 cm
Description

You are bidding on a larger piece with numerous small radial clusters of colorless kastningite crystals. A small seam hosts white balls of kingsmountite, platy crystals of fairfieldite and some yellow balls of eosphorite. This is the only time I have ever found kastningite in association with kingsmountite at the Foote Mine. This kingsmountite probably represents the manganese analogue of the mineral and studies of it will be underway soon. There is also a large area of botryoidal mitridatite on one corner of the specimen. Unusual assemblage from the Foote Mine.
