Description

Iron-cross twins of pyrite were first described from these German localities. Here pyrite twins occur in reduced light green marls. For an unknown reason on these localities all crystals are interpenetration twinned by this law, and the secret remained unexplained until recently. Given the abundance of pyrite in Earth's crust twins are exceptionally rare and it is yet unknown how they form. Our electron microscopy study has shown that single atomic layer of Cu appears to be responsible for twinning of pyrite.

I got this specimen from my Dutch collector friend Tim Welting who collected them many years ago with his son. It contains three symmetrically developed iron-cross twins of pyrite. while in their interior they have golden metallic luster, on the surface they are oxidized. The oxide layer is so thin that it is translucent under light, making the crystals reddish under illumination.
