Description

Queensland is known for its boulder opal, an unique type of opal, which is found in an ironstone host rock. This type of opal is exclusive to Queensland, and occurs in weathered sedimentary Cretaceous rocks at the west of the state. Much of the opal mining in Queensland is carried out in open cut operations. The town of Quilpie is known as an opal town. It is often referred to as the home of the boulder opal, and is the largest producer of this type of opal in the world.

This is a fine specimen of non-polished, natural boulder opal from this classic locality. Veins of shimmering blue opal are lining between the light and dark brown layers of sandstone and ironstone is what makes this piece an unique art of its nature. As it can be seen, the opal vein penetrates through the 2 cm thick specimen to its back side. The specimen stands well in many orientations.
