Description

This hematite crystal with golden rutile comes from the World's most famous locality of star-rutiles. The nature of these crystals is amazing. Domain texture on hematite evidences twinning of hematite, that can be seen due to weak etching of hematite basal section. At first glance is seems that also the rutiles are twinned, but this is not a true twinning, because their orientation is dictated by the hematite structure.

The secret lies in oriented growth on hematite. This is possible because the rutile and hematite have a closely related structural framework, just the cations need to be placed in proper interstices and we get one or another mineral. If there is abundance of Fe in the solutions, we get hematite, and when there is a surplus of Ti, the rutile is growing. The golden luster of rutiles arises from reflection of light on parallel grown rutile fibers.

This specimen displays all these amazing structural features.
