Description

A cluster of fine rodlike aegirine crystals from the World's famous syenite pegmatite locality in Southern Malawi. The luster of aegirine surpasses that from any other locality. I acquired the specimen from local miners when I visited Mt. Malosa in 2010. The trip was organized by the Malawian mineral dealer Mario Picciani from Lilongwe.

Most of the aegirine specimens are collected along precipitous walls on the western slopes of Mt. Malosa, where the land erosion is most extreme due to active fault intersecting the Malosa pluton. The terrain is crumbly and the falls are 300-600 m deep. When seeing this, I started to respect the miners and any specimen that they collect from these localities. Myself I dug out a few, not so attractive aegerines, in a safe ridge above the main localities. This specimen comes from the Razor mine.
