Description

In the town of Taganana, Tenerife, there is an outcrop of basaltic rocks with an amalgam of greenish-colored minerals in which the olivine stands out among the series of the Fayalite-Forsterite or olivine group, the olivine, of vitreous luster, with a high hardness, has great transparency, and a habit usually of short and compact prisms, vertically striated; and an orthorhombic crystalline system. It is a silicate also called peridot, which has a color that can vary from yellow to olive green and even greenish brown, depending on the amount of iron in the crystalline structure, the most valued color being a dark olive green. In this sample you can see some green areas surrounded by iddingsite crystasl, an alteration occurred on olivine.
